Prisoners on a Projecting Platform.

The Pier with Chains.

The Round Tower.

The Gothic Arch.

Erastus Salisbury Field (1805-1900) started work on his Historical Monument of the American Republic in 1867, representing 250 years of American history in 130 panels, to complete it in time for the 1876 centenary of American Independence. He was still applying the finishing touches to it in 1888. If built, the towers would have reached some 150m (500ft), connected by a steam railway across the top. ‘A professed architect, on looking at this picture, might have the impression that a structure built in this form would not stand,’ wrote the artist, admitting, ‘I am not a professed architect, and some things about it may be faulty.’
